Desert Ridge High School
[ Mesa, Arizona ]

Gilbert Unified School District’s fourth high school is an adaptation of their third high school design, Mesquite High School, which is another HDA project.  The success of implementing the District’s desired high school curriculum as well as knowing what the construction costs would be for the new facility were the overriding factors in deciding to adapt the existing high school concept for the new school.

Mesquite High School was constructed in two phases with a total of 352,311 square feet.  The overall project cost and square footage exceeded the School Facilities Board’s allotment.  As a result, the investigation process for Desert Ridge High School included the study of programs that could be accommodated in the new facility, and which programs would need to be funded by alternate means in the future.

Desert Ridge has a fully enclosed courtyard that provides optimal control and security.  The design incorporates surveillance cameras and fully integrated voice, video, and data systems.  The building design enhances the integrated curriculum philosophy. One of the most challenging aspects of adapting the Mesquite design was in balancing the budget as set by the School Facilities Board, while still incorporating those elements that have become commonly expected in a contemporary high school, such as a full complement of athletic facilities.
